Slow planetary rotation, the push and pull of the moon, a Book — Paul Pearson’s debut collection of poems lays before readers a mapping and re-mapping of the familiar systems of order we rely on to survive the human experience. Reflecting on the principles set down by both Galileo and the Church, Lunatic Engine directs our gaze to the heavens, to the childhood home, to the womb, to the quiet moments of our daily lives to contemplate what comfort is offered by doctrines when staring down the barrel of birth, death, and everything in between.
Paul Pearson is the co-founding editor and chapbook designer for the Olive Reading Series. Paul has since relocated to Edmonton where he lives and writes with his wife and two children. Lunatic Engine is his debut collection.
Alice Major has published 11 poetry collections and a book of essays on poetry and science—a combination which makes her extra enthusiastic about Paul Pearson’s collection. She served as Edmonton’s first poet laureate; Her many awards include the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist award and an honorary doctorate of letters from the University of Alberta.
Dava Sobel, a former New York Times science reporter, is the author of Longitude, Galileo’s Daughter, The Planets, A More Perfect Heaven, And the Sun Stood Still and The Glass Universe. She has also co-authored six books, including Is Anyone Out There? with astronomer Frank Drake.
